Entry Math Requirements by Major

The following majors do not have math requirements:

Anthropology; Applied Linguistics and Multiculturalism; Art; Biology BA; Classical Studies; Community Studies; Critical Race and Ethnic Studies; Education, Democracy, and Justice; Feminist Studies; Film and Digital Media; Global and Community Health BA; History; History of Art and Visual Culture; Jewish Studies; LALS/Politics combined; LALS/Sociology combined; Language Studies; Latin American and Latino Studies; Legal Studies; Linguistics; Literature; Music; Philosophy; Politics; Sociology; Spanish Studies; Theater Arts.

*Sociology requires statistics (SOCY 3BSTAT 5STAT 7L, or PSYC 2), not math.
**Biotechnology require statistics (STAT 5) not math.
***Biology B.A. does not require a MATH course for the degree, but it does require general chemistry courses which have MATH prerequisites. For example, CHEM 3A requires MATH 2 (or higher) prerequisite or as a co-requisite to enroll. These prerequisites may be satisfied through ALEKS assessments, AP scores, or completing the appropriate MATH course(s) as co- or pre-requisites. Confer with an adviser should you have questions.

Please verify the requirements for your (prospective) major in the General Catalog before enrolling in your course.

Once you’re confident that you know the math requirement for your intended major or minor, return to the Math Placement home page for the next step in the process.

**IMPORTANT: If your math placement (MP) score is not high enough to take the recommended entry level math course, you should spend time reviewing materials in the ALEKS PPL learning modules and reassess. You can reassess up to three times. The learning modules help you to review math concepts and problems before you take your first math class and can help you succeed. Studies show most students who spend at least six hours in the modules move up at least one placement tier.

We recommend that all students take advantage of the free prep in ALEKS, even if your score is high enough to allow you to register for your intended course.
